Lots of history, color and atmosphere

City located 1/3 of the way from Recife to RioSafety might be an issue - but that goes for all of Brazil's big cities
Famous for its (UNESCO listed) old town and annual carnival
Nice historical sights, good beaches, and one of Brazil's most colorful cities

Salvador is a major city on Brazil's east coast, located at the Bay of All Saints, about 2/3 of the distance from Rio de Janeiro to Recife. Salvador is the capital of the state of Bahia and as almost anyone who has visited it will tell you, it is one of the most colorful places in the entire country. And in a country as colorful and vibrant as Brazil, that truly means something...

Salvador was the original capital when the Portuguese set up shop on these shores, and that fact nowadays still remains very visible in two things: one is the magnificent colonial architecture you see in the old town (or Cidade Alta, with UNESCO status), and one is the city's population. Salvador played a prominent role in the region's slave trade, and has been labeled the Afro-descendant capital of Latin America.

To get a quick feeling of what the old town is all about, hop over to the Rua Chile that leads you up to the cliff overlooking the bay, and walk past the neoclassical Palacio Rio Branco Salvador (Brazil's first government building), then head on to the Praça Sé and the connected Praça Terreiro de Jesus with its lanky palm trees hanging over the square. Here you will see the 17th century Cathedral Basilica of Salvador, and in and around the square food stalls are hawking their dishes.

Sounds fairly appealing doesn't it? And we haven't even mentioned a word about the fact that it hosts the largest carnival in the world and its beaches are mesmerizing. [Review by travelindicator]
