California's capital city

Sacramento is the capital city of California
Often overlooked, but with world-class museums and historic neighbourhoods it shouldn't be
Old Sacramento brings you back to the era of the old West

Sacramento is not an obvious tourist destination. In a state that has as much to offer visitors as California, a city like this predictably fails to get its fair share of the limelight. Nevertheless we found Sacramento to be a fun few days getaway, with enough attractions to keep one thoroughly entertained during their stay.

Sacramento is the state capital of California, which means that it is a relatively history-rich place. Our favorite part of town is Old Sacramento, which runs along the Sacramento River. The atmosphere here is that of the pioneers in the old West, with historic buildings with wooden facades standing along boardwalks. Bars, restaurants and other (souvenir) shops are housed within them, while you will also find the California State Railroad Museum in the area.

The State Capitol and parks around it will of course need to be seen, as does Sutter's Fort a few blocks east. This was the first outpost in the west, established by Johann August Sutter in the 1840s. Some more excellent museums (such as the Crocker Museum of Art which is highly recommended) and a zoo complete the list of Sacramento attractions.

If you are still around here at the end of the day it may be worthwhile to extend your stay until the next morning, as the nightlife in the downtown and midtown area of the city has started becoming really, really good and happening. [Review by travelindicator]
