São Paulo is the largest city of Brazil, located in the country's southeast, at roughly a 5 hours drive from Rio de Janeiro. With a population in the city proper of over 11 million and nearly 21 million in it agglomeration, this is the seventh largest city in the world.
And as you may expect from a city of that size, São Paulo is a hard beast to tame. Often associated with traffic jams, pollution, poverty, crime and grey weather, you may wonder why you would want to come here at all, if there is so much beauty in Brazil outside of this city?
The answer is simple and can be summarised in one word: lifestyle. This is a laid-back city of enormous ethnic diversity (Chinese, Arab, German, Japanese, Korean, to name some), with a passion for culture and gastronomy. Yes, you will of course find poverty if you stray far enough into the outer suburbs, but it is Brazil's largest middle class that has shaped the city proper, and it tells.
So don't close your eyes for the social issues, but do go out and enjoy those great museums (Museu de Arte de São Paulo for instance, considered the best art museum in the whole continent housing mainly western masters), restaurants, markets (the Calixto market with antiques and handicrafts, for instance) and other tourist sites (the historic center with its many landmarks, or the Avenida Paulista with its vibrant mix between old and new buildings and its shops, pubs, art galleries and restaurants!). All the while taking in the atmosphere and thinking to yourself how surprising it is that you are feeling so at ease in a place like this. Maybe you tamed the beast after all...
