Recife is a coastal city in Brazil's northeast, and the capital of the country's Pernambuco state. The city has a Dutch and Portuguese colonial history, and is mainly known for its colorful old town (Recife Antigo), lively cultural scene, beaches with coral reefs in front of them, and a modern cityscape of high rises towering above the Atlantic coast. The combination of the latter with its old town, make this an interesting place to visit.
Recife is spread out across several islands, and on one of them lies Recife Antigo. At the heart of the old town lies the Marco Zero Square, looking out over the Atlantic and lined with colorful historic buildings. Near there also stands the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the oldest one anywhere in the Americas. Moving off the island in southward direction, you soon end up at the Forte das Cinco Pontas with the Recife City Museum housed in it.
When it comes to beaches, Boa Viagem Beach is the hotspot. The most well known urban beach in the country and perhaps the world, this is a very long stretch (8km) of wide white sand beaches with green water in front of them, lined with restaurants and bars.
Oh, and needless to say, the annual Recife's Carnaval attracts more than 1.5 million people each year and is absolutely kicking. [Review by travelindicator]
