Ragusa (Italy)

Ragusa Travel Guide and Trip Resources

Sicilian baroque town

Ragusa is a historical town with UNESCO World Heritage status that is situated inland in the south of Sicily. It is divided into two separate parts: Ragusa Superiore and Ragusa Ibla. The latter is the old town and what you see pictured with this article. It is a lovely mix of Sicilian baroque architecture, steep and narrow streets, piazzas and marvelous views. Much of what you see in town dates from 1693, when an earthquake destroyed the town and the citizens decided to rebuild it.

The main sights that cannot be missed are the Basicila di San Giorgio with its neoclassical dome, the public gardens of Giardini Iblei with its churches and views over town, and the Chiesa di Maria delle Scale church. [Review by travelindicator]
