With good beaches, "the friendly city" as its nickname, lots of sunshine and maximum temperatures fluctuating throughout the year between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) it should be no surprise that Port Elizabeth attracts tourists. This city in South Africa's Eastern Cape is the country's fifth largest, and some would say its most hospitable and laid-back.
Of course the most attractive aspects of Port Elizabeth are the beaches and nature in its immediate vicinity. However, the city does have a number of historical sights as well, and these are best explored by following the 5km long Donkin Heritage Trail. This trail passes by nearly 50 historical sites that go back to the 1820s when thousands of British settlers stepped on land here. They include the 1858 City Hall, which is quite a beautiful building, the Victorian gothic library, and settler houses. The trail has information boards along it, so you can explore things all by yourself and read up on the city's history.
Addo Elephant National Park lies at a 1.5 hour drive from Port Elizabeth and is home to hundreds of elephants. Even closer to town lies the Kragga Kamma Game Reserve where you can see rhinos, buffalos, cheetahs and giraffes in natural surroundings.
The Algoa Bay coastline in front of the city is 16km long, and includes the great beaches of Hobie, Kings and Humewood, which all have protected swimming areas. [Review by travelindicator]
