Piraeus (Greece)

Piraeus Travel Guide and Trip Resources

Athens harbour

Piraeus is the port of Athens, facing the Saronic Gulf and at no more than a 15 minutes drive from Athens center. The city's history dates back to ancient Greece, when it formed the main harbour of the country, a title which it reclaimed in recent centuries after a period of decline. Pireaus is well integrated into the larger Athens metropolitan area.

Piraeus is not a very touristic part of Athens, and in fact most people will only come here to take a ferry to one of the many Greek islands in for instance the Aegean Sea. It is no surprise then, that besides the proximity to Athens proper, the main sight here is the harbour itself.

The Greek maritime museum in town depicts 3000 years of Greek nautical history. [Review by travelindicator]
