A seedy place that draws

Pattaya is a town on the east side of the Gulf of ThailandActually situated along a *very* nice stretch of beach, but not really a family-friendly place
Defines seediness with its go-go clubs and girlie bars

There is no need to beat around the bush here: Pattaya, on the east side of the Gulf of Thailand and about 2 hours by car from Bangkok, is a seedy place. Our guess is that you didn't really come here looking for Thailand's finest Buddhist temples when you stumbled upon this article about Pattaya anyway, so let's just get on with it, shall we?

Pattaya for most people is synonymous with girlie bars, go-go clubs, shady massage places and well, sex tourism. Stroll around Walking Street adjacent to Pattaya Beach at night and you will realise that this is not just a case of a place getting a bad rep, seediness single-handedly defines Pattaya. It all apparently began during the Vietnam War when 500 American soldiers came here to rest and relax. Development started from there, and the rest is history.

Obviously if all of this is your thing you will know where to go and what to do (ahem). Even if it isn't really your thing but you're not put off either by the just described loud and colorful spectacle, Pattaya's sights and sounds are guaranteed to fascinate. If you wish to avoid it altogether you can instead spend time at the more family-friendly Jomtien Beach.

If you spend your time there, we reckon you may also be interested in finding out that those Buddhist sights we just referred to are not just some kind of fantasy. Buddha Hill and the gorgeous Sanctuary of Truth are some of the sights to check out if it's not Thai ladies (or ladyboys) that you are after. [Review by travelindicator]
