Palermo is the capital of the the southern Italian (island) region of Sicily. The city proper has a population of just over 650,000 and lies on the north side of Sicily, nearer to Tunis in Tunisia than to Rome. Not surprisingly, this city has one of the warmest climates of any place in Europe, with an annual average temperature of over 18 degrees.
Although normally not listed as a must-see in Italy, there's actually a good amount to be seen here, and the atmosphere is different enough to other Italian cities to make a visit absolutely worthwhile. Palermo is filled with history and culture, with palaces, churches and both Arab and Norman influences on display. The Cathedral and Palazzo dei Normanni cannot be skipped on any visit.
The food scene of Palermo is renowned as well and allows visitors to really indulge. You will find plenty of expensive restaurants to eat in, but what this place is really known for is the street food eaten in places like the bustling markets of Vucciria, Capo or Ballaro
Palermo is a port city so within the heart of the city you won't find any beaches. In the northern borough of Mondello however you will find a fantastic about one mile long stretch of beach. Located in between two cliffs, the sand is golden and the water is blue/green, making for a spectacular setting. [Review by travelindicator]
