Ouarzazate is a city of over 50,000 people in Central Morocco, situated to the south of the High Atlas mountains and to the north of the Sahara desert, earning it the nickname "Door of the Desert". Ouarzazate is the largest town in Saharan Morocco and an excellent place to start an excursion into desert areas from, as well as to explore some of the cultural sights around.
The most notable of these cultural sights is the town of Ait Benhaddou, a fortified city (or ksar) made of mud buildings that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site that lies at a short (half an hour) drive from town. Many movies were shot here (notably Lawrence of Arabia). Speaking of movies, the other must-do here is a visit to Atlas Film Studios, the largest film studio in the world where so many movies with a desert setting were shot.
Finally, take note of the climate, which border on unbearable in the summer months. [Review by travelindicator]
