Osh (Kyrgyzstan)

Osh Travel Guide and Trip Resources

3000 years of history

Osh is the second city of Kyrgyzstan in terms of size and is situated in the country's southern Fergana Valley, close to the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border. It is about a day's drive away from the capital Bishkek.

The city, as you will read everywhere, has 3000 years of history. Built along the Silk Road, it was ideally located to grow and prosper. Things don't seem to have been particularly well-conserved however, as the cityscape is quite dull and most major sights relate to the city's time under Soviet rule. Large statues of Lenin and Soviet architecture mix and match. Osh does have a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mount Sulayman, in fact a sacred place for muslims as the prophet Solomon is said to be buried here, which is a rocky mountain that gives you good views over the city after a climb. A cave in the mountain is used as a museum with historical and archeological artifacts. The big bazaar in Osh is one of the biggest and most bustling in Central Asia.

As a not unimportant footnote, Osh is a city that is divided between roughly half the population being Kyrgyz and the other half Uzbek. In 2010 a violent uprising left hundreds dead. [Review by travelindicator]

More Osh travel resources

Honestly, there is not a whole lot of other information we can link to with regards to Osh. When the Tripadvisor only lists a dozen or so attractions you know not many people go here. Still, there is Wikitravel keeping it short and sweet and Lonely Planet with a basic intro. Travel the whole world apparently travels the whole world so clearly that explains why they also went to Osh. Bradt Travel Guides covers the city, while Goats on the road talks about traveling from Osh to Sary Moghul. Advantour has some basics too.
