The Pirates Nest

Stunning viewsTouristy in the summer
Fascinating History

Once upon a time, where the Cetina river meets the Adriatic sea, there was a town made of stone. Safely sat in its harbour of gorges it was protected by forts that sit on sheer cliffs of limestone. Any incoming enemy could be sighted and held to ransom for their invasion. This place was the Pirates nest and these were the most dangerous and feared tyrants of the Adriatic Sea...

Sounds like a fairytale, but alas this is the reported history of little old Omiš (albeit with a creative licence to slightly exaggerate). This is a location with a fascinating history, of Pirates, battles, crusades, powerful rules and falling under the rule of multiple empires.

Omiš is a beautifully set seaside town with cliffs remaining as its impressive backdrop. Though visitors will find it to be much friendlier than in former times. And one need not invade to visit the Mirabella fortress to capture some great views of the town and the sea.

Pleasant waterside restaurants, 8 churches, beaches - some sandy some pebble. A must, for those able, is to check out at least one of the forts, more for the view than the structure. You'll get some great pics of the town, cliffs and river.

For those more adventurous, there is also challenging rafting and rock climbing to be had.

Enjoy this little gem of a location. [Review by nikodonnell]
