The capital of Siberia

Look this place up on the map. If there is such a thing as the center of the Eurasian continent, this is it. Novosibirsk in southwestern Siberia is the third largest city in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is situated on the Ob River and is located at an approximately 4 hour flight from the capital. Another convenient way of reaching the city is by the Trans-Siberian Railway.

The biggest thing you may be wondering about a city literally located in the middle of nowhere that gets maximum temperatures of -12°C (10°F) in January is: "why visit?!" And assuming you are not coming here for business reasons (Novosibirk is an industrial center home to several headquarters of large Russian firms), that is a tricky question to address.

Because quite frankly, there isn't *that* much to do or see here. Sure, there is Lenin Square (Ploshchad Lenina) with its huge Soviet statues. The golden-domed Byzantine Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is worth checking out and the State Opera & Ballet Theater is imposing as well as a nice place to stroll around. There is also a good zoo and the riverside promenade is nice. What's more, nightlife is decidedly decent here (they love their Irish pubs). But given its size yet lack of tourism resources, the true attraction of this city may be that it gives you a glimpse into real every day Russian city life. [Review by travelindicator]
