Gateway to Laos

Nong Khai is a town in north-eastern ThailandAfter 1 or 2 days you will have seen it all
The main entry point to Vientiane, Laos from Thailand due to the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge located here
Easy going town on the Mekong with a few interested wats and an open air statue museum to check out

You can just picture us doing it. We took the map of Thailand, had a look at the places we have covered, and spotted this huge empty gap up in the north-east. This scorching hot pocket does not get a lot of love from tourists, which is a classic case of "there's so much to see elsewhere".

Nong Khai is a city in the province with the same name that is curled like a snake along the Mekong River. If you are backpacking across the region and looking for a place to cross the border, Nong Khai may be one of the most convenient places to do so. Cross the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge in town and in just about 10-15 kilometers you will find yourself in Vientiane, capital of Laos.

Before you cross that bridge though, you should make the best of your last days in Thailand by exploring sleepy Nong Khai. We say sleepy with the most positive of intentions, as we can hardly think of a better way to enjoy our holidays than to sit back watching a sunset over the Mekong with a Singha in hand and Thai food in front of us.

But enough of that imagery, as there are actually some real attractions to explore too. The statue park of Sala Kaeo Ku at the eastern end of town is what everyone will direct you to at first, and features (some enormous) concrete statues of Buddhas and Hindu Gods. They were constructed by a Laotian man (Boun Leua Sourirat) who started working on them in the 1970s and in some cases quite bizarre. Other wats that you can check out include (but are not limited to!) the Phrathat Bang Phuan, Wat Khaek and Wat Pho Chai. The latter is Nong Khai's most visited temple.

A river cruise and a casual walk or bike along the promenade are among the activities that bring us back to the theme of the tranquil nature of this town. [Review by travelindicator]

More Nong Khai travel resources

For some reason a website called Chiang-Mai.org has the most useful article on Nong Khai. They even go into detail of for instance the statue park. Other useful sources are the Nong Khai Wikitravel and Lonely Planet, Rough Guides and Travelfish.org. Good travel blogs include Random Travel Blog and BBQ Boy. Actually come to think of it, that very last link may be more useful than all of the others we just mentioned.
