Aleksandr Zykov

The third city of Russia

No? This city, home to well over a million Russians and Russia's fifth largest city, does not ring a bell? Oh well, that's why we are here. Nizhniy Novgorod is a city in western Russia, at about a 5 hours drive from Moscow and situated on the confluence of Volga and Oka rivers.

Nizhniy Novgorod may be considered Russia's third city in terms of importance after Moscow and St. Petersburg, but it is decidedly less worldly and more of a provincial town than them both. That actually makes it a very pleasant city to visit - some of the rougher edges of those places (ok let's be frank, I'm talking about rudeness) - is taken off here. The main sights in town are the kremlin, Sakharov museum, Maxim Gorky museum and the Makaryev Monastery nearby. [Review by travelindicator]
