Niseko (Japan)

Niseko Travel Guide and Trip Resources

Jun Kaneko

One of Japan's top ski resorts

Niseko is one of Japan's most famous ski resorts, attracting numerous (western) ski fanaticsLength of prepared ski slopes compares unfavorably with most European resorts, but there is extensive off-poste skiing
Great scenery, decent nightlife and excellent restaurants
Slopes are long and gentle

If you're looking for a winter sports area, snow is a pretty big factor, no? Meet the town of Niseko in Hokkaido, Japan. For those of us skeptical about going skiing in Japan let us contrast its typical weather in January/February with a random ski resort town in Tyrol, one of Europe's premier winter sports destinations in the Austrian Alps: during these months, Niseko on average has maximum temperatures that are 3 to 6 degrees Celsius cooler than its counterpart in Tyrol, and average snowfall/precipitation is about 3 times greater.

So the fundamentals are pretty sound, and when combined with great scenery (like for instance the 1,898m peak of Mt Yotei - which bears a resemblance to Mt Fuji), a real nightlife scene and especially great culinary offerings, it starts to make sense that for a lot of non-Japanese this is the premier wintersports destination in the country. The powdery snow is often deep, the gondola and covered chair lifts reach far (the area connects the slopes of 3 villages), and the slopes are typically quite gentle and long.

Take note that the cool weather also comes with a flipside: during some periods - i.e. when weather fronts from Siberia pass by - you will not see much sun here. The positive remark we can place with that is that given its relatively low altitude (1,300m on top of Mt Niseko An’nupuri), visibility is rarely an issue. [Review by travelindicator]
