Let the good times roll

New Orleans is a port city in the United States' state of Louisiana. Situated amid the swamps and founded by the French in 1718, this is one of the oldest cities in the country. It is also one of the most 'different', with a liberal and often somewhat extravagant atmosphere that combines Creole, French, Caribbean and African-American influences in one harmonious mix. New Orleans is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States.

The famous Mardi Gras carnival and Jazz Fest (held in early January and late April/early May respectively) are the two festivals that fill the city to the brim with people. But there is plenty to be seen and done during the rest of the year, too. The French Quarter is where most things happen, and at the heart of it stands Jackson Square with the St. Louis Cathedral, Presbytere and Cabildo surrounding it. The French Quarter is best explored on foot, and has an enormous variety of great places to eat, drink and party (for the latter, check out Bourbon Street at night).

Another famous sight in town are, oddly enough but befitting the city's character, the city's cemeteries. [Review by travelindicator]
