This will sound generic (please don't shoot us), but have you seen that fantastic scenery around Nelson? That mountainous coastal scenery, the golden beaches, the rolling vineyards in the background, the sunny weather? If you are designated to be one of the cities with the best quality of life in a country with a *high* quality of life like New Zealand, I suppose that says it all, doesn't it?
Nelson is a city of just over 60,000 at the far northern end of New Zealand's South Island. Situated at the coast and with Abel Tasman National Park next door and Kahurangi National Park within reach, I guess we do not need to go too far into the natural attractions and what you could do with them. Well OK then, just a few: go swimming, go hiking, go biking, go diving, go sailing, go paragliding... Or just sit in the sun enjoying a good glass of wine at one of the vineyards. Your choice really.
Although somewhat put in the shadow by its magnificent surroundings, the town of Nelson is a nice place to spend some time in, too. It is one of the cultural hotspots of the country with quite a vibrant local arts scene, many arts galleries and craft shops around town, as well as excellent culinary offerings. Perhaps above all it is a good base to start your explorations from. [Review by travelindicator]
