N'Djamena is the capital of Chad. With a population of nearly 1 million, it is also the country's largest city. As the country has seen political turmoil and armed conflict over the preceding decades, travelling here should be well thought through, though if you do go N'Djamena is probably the (relatively speaking) safest spot in the country to visit.
With a population that is mainly islamic, there is a large amount of mosques to be seen in the city. Other sights include a cathedral, the national museum and the Nation Square (Place de la Nation) which has some nice gardens around it. The most lively spot in the city by day is said to be the Grand Marché, where crafts, food, clothing and books are sold. For shopping in a more organised setting, head over to the Avenue Charles de Gaulle which is the main business and shopping place of the city. Here you will also find colonial buildings and embassies.
Beware of the weather between February and June, when temperatures can hit 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and higher. [Review by travelindicator]
