Seriously, that laundry in the picture didn't just *happen* to be there. In fact we think it would be seriously difficult to take a shot of Naples without laundry hanging out of the window somewhere. Naples in southern Italy (pop. 1 million) is a city with character, and part of that may just have something to do with its location.
Overlooking the Bay of Naples and uncomfortably squeezed in between the enormous Vesuvius - which looks exactly like how we drew volcanoes in our younger years - and the volcanic area of the Phlegraean Fields, who would've thought to build a city here? Yet Naples (Napoli in Italian) has been here for the longest and has a history dating back to the Bronze Age.
Its historical center, filled with narrow and steep alleys that are never too narrow or steep for scooters and locals frantically moving about, is one of the largest in the world and has UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The great thing about this area is that when exploring this you are practically walking around in an open-air museum, yet the area is very much alive. A feast for the eyes.
What else about Naples? Here are a few keywords: the Camorra (mafia). The birthplace of pizza. Poverty. Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii nearby. Hundreds of churches. Endless scooters. In summary: Naples is charismatic present and historic Italy all in one sans the mass tourism. Check it out. [Review by travelindicator]
