A city with some (recent) history

Nanjing (南京, literally meaning Southern Capital and sometimes transliterated as Nanking) is a megacity in the Yangtze River Delta of the People's Republic of China's Jiangsu Province. The city is served by its own airport, but can also be quite easily reached by car from Shanghai as it is only a 3-4 hours drive between the two cities.

As can be said for so many cities in China, Nanjing has a long history. It has always been one of the most important cities in China and has served as its capital in different eras. Most recently in the pre-Communist era when it served as the capital of Chiang Kai-shek's Republic of China which currently resides on Taiwan.

Nanjing has also sadly become synonymous with the 1937 savage Nanking massacre (also labelled the "Rape of Nanking") that the Japanese carried out in this city and where an estimated 300,000 to 350,000 people died. If you have any interest in China's recent history, or even if you just want to pay your respects, make sure to include the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall in your itinerary. This memorial hall, built on a mass grave site, is very solemn and the atmosphere there is perhaps only comparable to Auschwitz in Poland.

Other historical sights of importance related to recent history include the Presidential Palace and the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (which on clear days offers fantastic views - though be prepared to climb, see picture!). In the same area (it's called Purple Mountain) you will also find the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum and many other sights.

The rest of the city offers plenty of temples, old structures (like the city walls) and nice scenery. On top of that, not surprising given the city's size, there are plenty of high-end shopping malls and the nightlife really is quite bustling as well. Make your way to the 1912 District in the evening, and you are practically guaranteed to have a good time! [Review by travelindicator]
