City with an attitude and tons of history

Fascinating city with a great historyUnfriendly people
Kremlin and Red SquareCold winter weather
Luxury (thus expensive) shopping

Moscow is the capital and most important cultural and political city of the Russian Federation. With a population of over 11 million, it is also the largest city of both Russia and Europe. The city has over 800 years of history.

The Kremlin and accompanying Red Square are of course must-see sights. The Kremlin is a fortified complex in the very center of Moscow, which houses four palaces and five cathedrals, and is the residence of the President of Russia. Accompanying the Kremlin is the Red Square, home to an annual military parade and to the Eternal Flame where soldiers hold and change guards at set times. Here you will also find Lenin's Mausoleum, a macabre reminder of Russia's Soviet past. Towering over it is the iconic and colourful St. Basil's Cathedral.

If you want to shop, there is no need to go outside of the Red Square, as the GUM Department Shop stands right on the eastern end of it. This is where you will find the Prada's and Louis Vuitton's, though if you're on a budget it's still a great place to explore, if only for its architecture. There are plenty of places to eat inside too. Note that eating out in Moscow can be an expensive ordeal, but tasting some traditional Russian fare is definitely worth it. Try to avoid restaurants focussing on non-Russian food unless they are top quality.

Finally, beware, as Moscow is a city with an attitude - and many people would say not a friendly one. Don't expect many smiles here. Don't take it personal, it is just part of the Russian psyche. Like the Russian poet Tyutchev wrote: "Russia cannot be understood with your mind". Don't try to. [Review by travelindicator]
