The Principality of Monaco is the second smallest sovereign country in the world, only trailing the Vatican. Located at a half an hour drive from Nice and bordered on all sites except the coastline by France, Monaco participates in the EU Customs Union (though not a member), which means that anyone with the appropriate visa for France can enter.
Monaco looks spectacular when approaching it through the hairpin turns from France. Rocky mountains tower steeply down to the sea, where the gorgeous azure waters meet with the picturesque old streets of Monaco-Ville, while Ferrari engines roar around outside and people laze around on yachts in the harbour. And sure, you're in the right place if you want to shop at Gucci, Dior or Versace and end your afternoon with a mind-blowingly expensive glass of Champagne.
But that is not really all that Monaco is about. The old streets of Monaco-Ville (also known as "The Rock") are charming and house the Palace, Cathedral and City Hall. Best of all, they can be enjoyed for free. [Review by travelindicator]
