Milan. Are there any cities in the world that exude more pure style and class than this city? It is not only the fashion and design capital of the world, but also Italy's financial and economic center and the heart of its largest urban agglomeration. It may not have the historical sights of Rome, but while Rome may represent the "old" Italy, Milan firmly has its eyes on the present and the future. One may go to Rome for the history, but one should go to Milan for the lifestyle.
That lifestyle incorporates shopping, fashion and design, wining and dining, opera, partying hard and football (think AC Milan and Inter). Perhaps the best place to get a feeling for it is the Piazza del Duomo with its Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. The former is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals worldwide with hundreds of detailed ornaments on the exterior. You can climb to the top for fantastic views. The latter is an enormous shopping mall, or rather the mother of all shopping malls, as we like to call it. The 18th century building has a mosaic floor and glass roof, and is home to all the upscale Italian designers. After having walked around here, any other shopping mall you will ever enter anywhere else is going to feel like a poor imitation.
Around the Piazza del Duomo you will plenty of world-class restaurants, lovely cafés and bars. A great place to stroll around and take in the hustle and bustle of this glitzy city. At night, if you have tickets, make your way to La Scala Theatre, the world-famous opera house that has been in operation for over 200 years. [Review by travelindicator]
