Melbourne (Australia)

Melbourne Travel Guide and Trip Resources

Australia's most cultured city

Melbourne is the second largest city of Australia and capital of the southern state of Victoria. It is regularly topping charts for most "livable" cities in the world and is widely regarded as the cultural capital of Australia with a wealth of museums, parks, architecture and overall charm to keep visitors occupied for days.

History and architecture - First settled by Europeans in the early 1800s, Melbourne experienced a gold rush and property boom in the 19th century. The development that came along with that left a lasting impact on the cityscape. At the tail-end of the the century that followed, a lot of this was undone when many older buildings had to make place for new high rises. Fortunately a good part was also left untouched, and is still on display in the many historic buildings and monuments scattered around the city. Examples of must-see architecture are Flinders Street Railway Station and the Old Melbourne Gaol. Of course some of the more modern architecture in the CBD is worthwhile to explore (and climb!) as well.

Museums - There are some interesting niche museums in the city, such as the Immigration Museum and Police Museum. Make your pick out of those to fill your days here, but by no means omit a visit to the Melbourne Museum in the Carlton Gardens. The Science and Life gallery features impressive dinosaur skeletons.

Parks - No visit to Melbourne is complete without exploring some of the parks the city has to offer. The Royal Botanical Gardens and Fitzroy Gardens are highly recommended.

So that sets the scene for a pretty interesting city trip, right? But before we leave it at that we can't fail to mention that the city also features awesome beaches, night life and a food scene (as a legacy of its history as an immigrant city, the restaurants are fantastically diverse). One place where all of these ingredients seem to blend together very well is the beachfront suburb of St. Kilda. Recommended. [Review by travelindicator]
