For a while there, Marseille was working hard on establishing the wrong kind of reputation. Drug-related violence, mafia, "France's murder capital", just some things a quick Google search will associate with this city. Certainly the city has had its issues, mainly indirectly related to the fact that it has been one of the main ports of entrance for immigrants from north Africa, but let us ask you this: is New York spotless clean on every street corner? Does a vibrant city not need a few rough edges to make it truly interesting?
In recent years Marseille has had a major do-over related to it being named the European Culture Capital of 2013 that has focused on the arts and the Vieux Port (old harbor). The goal is to bring back tourists to the city, and although that will surely succeed, we can only wonder: why did they leave in the first place?
Walk around the Vieux Port and you will understand our point of view. This is the city's main harbor and marina, a splendid combination of boats and yachts against the backdrop of cafés, markets and fortresses lining the surrounding streets. In the background the Notre Dame de la Garde basilique towers over it, completing the ensemble. From here you can go and explore the nearby Le Panier, the oldest area of town that is set on higher ground. You don't need some grand plan to navigate the small streets lined with artisans shops, just follow your instinct (and nose) and explore! [Review by travelindicator]
