Manaus is a city of 2 million people that is located in the north of Brazil and in the middle of the Amazon, home to 50% of the entire population of the Amazon. Manaus is situated where the Solimões and Negro rivers come together and is a major port for ocean-headed vessels.
The main reason for tourists to come to Manaus is as a base for Amazon exploration. Most travel agencies that organise tours around the region operate from here, and the city offers a convenient starting point for tours into the Rio Negro basin or the South of Rio Amazonas. The former area is better for a jungle tour while the latter is good for river exploration.
As with places like these, the attractions of the city itself tend to be overlooked (admittedly, they do market themselves as the "gateway to the Amazon" so it is sort of asking for it!) but this is actually a pleasant city to spend some time in. It has some nice sights like the Teatro Amazons, an opera house built in the late 19th century, as well as good museums and a small but really quite good zoo. When it comes to food, there are plenty of good restaurants around, but don't forget to wander around some of the local food and product markets. The most famous is the Mercado Municipal.
