Madrid is the capital of Spain and practically located exactly in the middle of the country. With a population of over 3 million, it is also the largest city in Spain and the third largest in the European Union (trailing only London and Berlin). Home to the Spanish government and royal family, Madrid is a city that knows how to enjoy itself. Shopping, nightlife and culinary offerings are world class and all reasons in themselves to visit the city. All of this is set against a classy backdrop of fantastic architecture and great cultural attractions.
The very center of the city is the Puerto del Sol ("Gate of the Sun") plaza and surrounding areas. It is very busy and filled with tourists, and a good starting point for exploration. At the center of the square stands a statue of King Charles III on horseback, while another famous sight is the "Kilometro 0", where the measuring for the Spanish national highway system begins. Next up on your list of things to see should be the Prado Museum (Museum Nacional del Prado) and Palacio Real. The former hosts nearly 8000 paintings by Spanish greats like Velázquez, El Greco and Goya. The latter is the official residence of the Spanish royal family.
There are vast amounts of other attractions, neighbourhoods, churches, markets and parks and so on to explore, and it is really worthwhile to dig in and prepare well before you go here. After a long day of exploring make your way to the La Latina neighbourhood, home to tapas and a bohemian crowd on the hunt for good bars and places to eat. [Review by travelindicator]
