Capital of Ancient Egypt

Luxor was the capital of ancient Egypt under the name of Thebes
Prime location to visit for those heading to Egypt for cultural reasons
Main sights are tombs, monuments and temple complexes

Luxor was the capital of Ancient Egypt under the name of Thebes and is the foremost travel destination of southern Egypt and the Nile Valley. The premier sights in and around this city of half a million people are the temples complexes of Karnak and Luxor, which date back to 1300-1600 BC, as well as the Necropolis with the Valley of the Kings (where you will find the tomb of Tutankhamun and many others).

Sometimes described as the world's largest open-air museum, thing here are neatly divided between the two sides of the Nile. On the East Bank you find the modern city, while on the West bank lies the Necropolis. That location is of course symbolic, as the ancient Egyptians associated the setting of the sun on that side with the afterlife.

If you think that all of this is probably set in a desert-like setting then you are absolutely right if you are talking about the Necropolis. But at the same time, in the city directly adjacent to the Nile River there is no shortage of palm trees and the scenery is in fact quite lush. So after you check out the sights you may want to spend some time, for instance browsing around on the Souq, in the not-so-bad modern city too. [Review by travelindicator]
