So you've got a trip planned to Italy's Tuscany region? Probably one that includes either Pisa or Florence (or both, even)? Then consider making Lucca a part of your itinerary too.
This small town lies at a 20 minutes drive from Pisa and one hour drive from Florence, and while it may be less of a household name than the two cities you originally came here for, tourists in the know still arrive here in droves. And that is because Lucca is a delightful little historic city with plenty to offer its visitors.
Originating in Etruscan times, Lucca is one of those European cities with many historical layers. The best example of that are the city walls. Surrounding the center of town, they were built in four stages, ranging from Roman times to the 16th century and nowadays with a green park on top of it to stroll around on. Other historical sights include the 12th century Romanesque San Martino Cathedral, the 14th century Guinigi Tower and the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro (where the amphitheatre used to stand). With churches, towers, ruins and palaces on show there are plenty of sights to fill a day.
But don't come to Lucca with a guidebook in hand. Instead make use of the compact size of the city, let go a little, and just shuffle around from piazza to piazza. Take a picture here or there, do some shopping at Via Fillungo and end the day with a proper Tuscan meal and a glass of the finest wine produced by the surrounding vineyards. Life is good.
