Put your preconceived notions of Africa away for a moment. As a matter of fact, pretend that what we are about to write is not in any way, shape or form about Africa at all:
Gorgeously located at a natural harbor overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Luanda is a bustling city of beaches, museums, monuments, markets and churches. The population mostly speaks Portuguese and it's is not rare to see people driving Porsche's through streets lined with luxury brand shops.
But we have to be honest, all of this may yet be slightly deceiving. Because Luanda, as the capital of Angola, IS of course located in Africa. And while the scenery is beautiful (best admired from the promenade or the Ilha do Cabo peninsula), the city is wealthy, relatively safe, and the cultural offerings* are far above that of an average African metropolis, there are some things that will remind you of its location. Extended townships and manic traffic jams are also on the menu here. But the combination may just entice you to visit.
* Notable are the colonial fortresses of Fortaleza de São Miguel, Fortaleza de São Pedro da Barra as well as the National Museum of Slavery (1), Natural History (2) and Anthropology (3). [Review by travelindicator]
