Los Angeles is the largest city in the American state of California, and with a metropolitan population of over 17 million people, this vast city is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world.
Home to Hollywood, Universal Studios, Beverly Hills and Venice Beach and surrounded by mountains (behind which lies the desert), this is a city that speaks to the imagination of many a tourist. Not to mention the fact that it is a city of practically endless summer weather! But even though the main tourist attractions are obvious and easily found, getting a grip on and really exploring this enormous city will cost you some time.
LA has a reputation for being a somewhat superficial city (some readers will surely wonder why I used the word "somewhat" there). From the perfectly tanned would-be actresses in designer clothes to the hard-bodies at Venice Beach, there is definitely some truth to this. But that's part of the attraction of LA. So by all means, make your way to Hollywood, Rodeo Drive and Venice Beach and do as you would do when you are watching shows or movies filmed in the area: gasp and stare and enjoy the sights.
If once you have seen the stereotypical sights of LA you are looking for something less artificial to explore, then not to worry because a whole other world is about to open up to you. You can head to Olvera Street for a taste of historic Los Angeles, go to one of the great museums around (Getty Center with its views over the LA basin, or the Museum of Contemporary Art are highly recommended), or hike up to Griffith Park for spectacular views over the city.
And it's not like once you have done all of this you will have to be bored. Have a day out to one of the beaches, go shopping or attend a basketball or baseball game at the (your pick) Lakers, Dodgers, Clippers, Angels... [Review by travelindicator]
