Leipzig is a city in Saxony, Germany with a population of over half a million. It is located to the southwest of Berlin (a 2 hour drive) and is one of the major industrial and cultural centers of eastern Germany. Heavily bombed during World War 2, playing a pivotal role in the events of 1989, and former home of Bach, Wagner, Mahler and Mendelssohn, it is fair to see this is a city of significance and (sometimes tragic) history.
The key historic attraction here is probably the Old Rathaus (Town Hall). This building, built in the 16th century in Renaissance style, is located on the Marktplatz (market square) and is an impressive sight. The market square area itself is very lively and surrounded by other architectural highlights as well as shops and plenty of places to eat and drink. Heading a bit out of the center you will find the equally imposing New Rathaus.
Other than the architecture, there are some very interesting (though niche) museums. One such example is the one in the former Stasi headquarters detailing the workings of the former DDR secret police. Others are the Bach museum or the Mendelssohn house. Finally, a landmark that can't be missed is the Volkerschlachtdenkmal, the largest monument in Europe dedicated to the Battle of Leipzig where Napoleon was defeated.
So that will keep you occupied during the day. As this is a university city (Leipzig University boasts nearly 30,000 students), in the evening you won't have any issues finding a good place for a cold beer or some loud music. Or, if you are so inclined, be a bit more in touch with the city's history and go to a classical concert at the famous Gewandhaus zu Leipzig. [Review by travelindicator]
