Florence of the south

Lecce is one of the larger cities in Italy's Apuglia
Nicknamed the Florence of the South for its abundance of Baroque architecture
Often missed out on due to its location, but that isn't justified

How many non-domestic tourists to Italy actually make it all the way down here, to the very heel of the Italian boot? Not many, but I suppose there are some. Out of those tourists, how many head to the beach and never take a closer look at Lecce? You are probably not left with a great amount of visitors. But since this place is nicknamed the "Florence of the south" that is probably not the best informed decision those visitors could make.

The historical center (centro storico) of Lecce is a Baroque ensemble whose specific style according to UNESCO features on "porticoes, windows, balconies, loggias, gargoyles, corbels, festoons, columns and cornices crowded with human figures, flowers and animals." If you know what to look for, there is plenty to see.

But even if not, you will notice that the typical pale limestone used here gives the city a distinct character, and sights like the Porta Napoli or the Roman Theater and Obelisk at the Piazza S. Oronzo are unmissable. Not to mention the large number of gorgeous churches - such as the Basilica di Santa Croce - you will find in this bustling university city. [Review by travelindicator]
