The old port

La Rochelle is a city on France's Atlantic coast of just over 80,000 people
Its old port is a charming place to stroll around and get a bite or a drink
The rest of the old town is very, very pretty

Put simply, if you head to La Rochelle in France's south-western region of Charente-Maritime, the Vieux Port (Old Port) is where it's at. This port, which was in its prime some hundreds of years ago and has two imposing medieval defensive towers sticking out from the water as proof, is the focal point of tourism to the city, and for good reason.

Walking around here on a sunny day in June, you get the feeling that there is a certain je-ne-sais-quoi that makes one feel like you are at the Riviera rather than the Atlantic coast. A splendid yacht harbor, good looking people casually strolling around on the promenade wearing designer clothing and sunglasses, and in the background dozens of lively bars and restaurants overlooking the harbor doing excellent business. That's La Rochelle in a nutshell - we challenge you to find a more pleasant place to spend some time in on that sunny day in June.

Besides eating and drinking in the harbor, the view from the Tour de la Lanterne is worth checking out. Venture further into the old town you will find that La Rochelle, with its narrow streets and winding alleys, is almost painfully pretty. The town is not rich in beaches (Plage des Minimes - next to the massive yacht harbor with the same name - is the best one they do have), but outside of town you will find plenty. There you will also find seemingly endless flat lands that are a good spot for bicyclists that don't fancy the mountains. [Review by travelindicator]
