Diamonds are forever

Kimberley was the place where diamonds were first found in South Africa in 1866
Site of the Big Hole, (one of) the largest excavations dug out by hand
Magersfontein battlefield and museum are cool for history buffs

It's interesting that a city with historical significance like Kimberley is a relatively lesser known destination for tourists into South Africa. Kimberley (pop 255,000) in the Northern Cape was the site of a mining rush in the mid to late 19th century - the discovery of diamonds would have a big impact on the country at that time - and later became the place of one of the most infamous battles of the Second Boer War.

There are enough attractions in town related to these for Kimberley to warrant a spot on your itinerary if you make your way to the Northern Cape, and the most iconic one is the Big Hole. This is a massive water-filled excavation that was dug out by hands during the diamond rush. Nowadays it is owned by the De Beers diamond mining firm, who run a very well maintained visitor center where you can learn more about the history of mining in the area. Another must-see, especially for history buffs, is the Magersfontein battlefield and museum. The Honoured Dead Memorial relates to these events as well, while totally unrelated yet very cool to visit is the Flamingo Island at Kamfers am. [Review by travelindicator]
