Kiev (Ukraine)

Kiev Travel Guide and Trip Resources

A hard sell?

Kiev is the capital of UkraineA bit drab in places
Mixture of great Soviet architecture, golden-domed churches, wide boulevards...
The Defence of the Motherland statue is larger than life

So... Kiev. This is going to be a hard sell isn't it?

Ukraine has seen quite a bit of turbulence in recent years and the images of violent protests in Maidan Square that started late 2013, followed by tons of political turbulence and a Russian invasion are I'm sure printed on the brain of many of us. But at time of writing (the tail end of 2015), Kiev is totally fine to visit again, even as the war in the east of the country rages on.

Let's ignore recent events for a moment though and just ask ourselves whether Kiev is worth a visit? We can start by pointing out its historical significance: this is one of Eastern Europe's oldest cities, and practically the cradle of East Slavic civilization (Kievan Rus was the first East Slavic state. Nowadays the city of nearly 3 million people sits at the heart of a process of "Europeanization" in the region.

And although Kiev may not be a Lviv in terms of attractiveness, we found it to be a very appealing city. You get your larger than life attractions such as the "Defence of the Motherland" Monument, you get your golden-domed churches such as the St Sophia’s Cathedral and UNESCO-listed Cave Monastery. But what we truly enjoyed most of all was just strolling along the very wide Khreshchatyk shopping street towards the (then very calm) Maidan and then along the upwards sloping streets to the St. Andrew's church and just admiring the massive Soviet architecture and the people of the city going about their business.
