Talo Pinto

An authentic American skiing experience

Ketchum is Sun Valley, Idaho's neighbour town
More authentic and rustic than its neighbour
Yet with the same fantastic amenities all around

Ketchum is a small town right next to Idaho's resort town of Sun Valley in the North-western United States. The area is famous for its year-round recreational offerings and great scenery, and both towns are overlooked by the 9,150 feet (2,789 m) high Bald Mountain ("Baldy") which has by some been labeled as one of the best skiing mountains in the world due to the good quality snow, its long drops and equally descending slopes.

Sun Valley, however, is also known for attracting the rich and the famous and having an atmosphere (however you wish to define that) to match it. That may be alright for some, but that is also where Ketchum comes into the picture. Do you want to make use of all the fantastic facilities in and around Sun Valley but are you looking for a more authentic experience? Ketchum, which in a way is Sun Valley's predecessor, is where it's at. A mining town in origin, Ketchum has retained its historic charm, and no better place to get a sense of that than when walking through Main Street on a snow-covered winter day, white mountain tops in the background and festive lights decorating the trees.

Don't think this place is only for (cross-country) skiing though. Bald Mountain has 28 miles of trails for hikers and bikers, and rafting on the Salmon River or fishing on one of its offsprings are great options too. Finally, with a town like Sun Valley next door you just know that in the evenings you won't want for fantastic dining establishments. [Review by travelindicator]
