Pristine surroundings

Karakol is the fourth largest city of Kyrgyzstan, located at about a 6 hour drive from Bishkek at the other side of the Issyk Kul Lake. The city was originally founded in 1869 by Russians, and in Kyrgyzstan's Soviet period was again used as a base for the Soviet military. The city is generally frequented for those coming to see the natural beauty nearby. Mainly the lake draws visitors, but the mountains nearby also offer plenty of opportunities for pursuing other activities and sports like hiking, skiing, horse riding or enjoying the spas.

Inside of the town, the famous sights are the the Dungan Mosque and the colorful Russian Orthodox Church (pictured). The surroundings of the town can only be described as pristine. Close to town is the Arasan gorge, offering some of the best sights and hiking opportunities in the country. [Review by travelindicator]
