Really though, Johor Bahru is quite the contrast with Singapore. Go to JB to shop and eat but mind your wallets and your bags while there, is the advice you are likely to hear from Singaporeans across the Causeway if you're considering a visit from there. But really though, that is a pretty outdated way of thinking as in recent years the state capital of Johor in southern (peninsular) Malaysia has cleaned up very nicely indeed.
In comparison to Singapore, which is often seen as a bit of a sterile place, Johor is indeed a more vibrant and unpredictable city. Like the friendly next door neighbours alluded to, for shopping and eating you can't go wrong. There are a good number of large malls with friendlier prices than across the water, and with a population that is predominantly mixed Malay, Chinese and Indian, you know the food is going to pretty awesome too. The hawker centers are the best places to check that out - unless you are in the know, go where the queues are!
Malaysian Legoland lies a bit further away (about 35km from the Causeway), but inside of town you have a number of temples and mosques as well as the appealing waterfront development Danga Bay to check out. [Review by travelindicator]
