Alright. Cape Town also has its rough edges. But whereas in Cape Town you can stroll around the "right" areas of town and be perfectly oblivious to any potential trouble, Johannesburg has significantly more trouble hiding its dark side. No surprise then, that the airport often seems to be the scene of families arriving for their South African holiday, only to seemingly scramble to get out of town as fast as possible.
This is not entirely fair (blame the travel agencies), as Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, has its fair share of things to do and see. And to put it simply, if you really want to experience South Africa and understand the country, Joburg cannot be missed. And we are not talking about just the sterile and safe suburbs either, just make sure to take the right precautions.
The townships of Soweto are a must-visit for the more adventurous. It is normally in all situations best to visit with a guide or tour group, but if you really want to do it on your own accord, inform locally what the safe areas are and don't stray from them. The Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill (go for a walk to Hillbrow if you are there anyway) and Market Theatre are other sights that relate to South Africa's recent history.
Once you have seen the city and taken it all in, you can go out of town and find fantastic natural reserves in practically all directions. [Review by travelindicator]
