Izmir (Turkey)

Izmir Travel Guide and Trip Resources

Pearl of the Aegean

Izmir is a metropolis in the extreme west of Turkey's Anatolia, at the Aegean coast. With a population of around 4 million, it is the third largest city in Turkey. What used to be the ancient Greek city of Smyrna is now a liberal and modern commercial center of Turkey that is sometimes more reminiscent of a city in the European Mediterranean than of a Turkish one.

So what are the main things to do here? Surprisingly for a city as old as Izmir, there are not too many historical sights around. There is the Konak Square with the iconic Clock Tower, as well as the ruins of the Roman market place at the Agora. But then, maybe that is not really the reason to come here. Spectacularly situated between mountains and around a natural bay, come here to enjoy the urban scenery, explore the city's bazaar and maybe take a break to one of the beach resorts nearby at for instance Cesme, Alacati or Ilica.
