Irkutsk (Russia)

Irkutsk Travel Guide and Trip Resources

The Paris of Siberia?

Irkutsk is a city of well over half a million people in the Oblast of the same name in Russia. It is also the closest city to the stunning Lake Baikal. The city became home to many intellectuals and artists sent into exile by Tsar Nicholas I in the early 1800s and features wide streets and a type of architecture that is reminiscent of European cities, earning it the nickname of the "Paris of Siberia". Irkutsk lies along the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Besides trips to Lake Baikal, Irkutsk is actually a really interesting city with churches and catchedrals, statues, markets and generally interesting architecture overall (think monstrous Soviet buildings next to traditional wooden Siberian houses). There are also some interesting museums, such as the Irkutsk Regional Memorial Decembrists Museum at Volkonsky House. [Review by travelindicator]
