Ipoh Old Town: a blast from the past

Ipoh is Malaysia's fourth largest city, often used as a gateway to the Cameron Highlands and Pangkor
Most prominent sight is Ipoh Old Town: well preserved colonial heritage
Around town: limestone hills with temples carved into them, most prominent is Perak Cave

175km (110 miles) to the north of Kuala Lumpur lies Ipoh, the capital of Malaysia's Perak state and with a population of 657,892 Malaysia's fourth largest city. As it is located near Pangkor and the Cameron Highlands, many tourists use Ipoh as a gateway to other places. The fact that it receives daily flights from Singapore's Changi Airport doesn't hurt either, in that respect.

Though it may be a gateway, Ipoh is fully worthy of dedicating some time to in your itinerary in its own right. Ipoh Old Town (pictured) feels like a blast from the past, the type of place where you find yourself forgetting that this is 2014 and not 1914. It is chock full of colonial architecture, amongst which the City Hall, Birch Memorial Clocktower and Edwardian Ipoh Railway Station are the most prominent. There are other impressive buildings, but even just the streets and old shophouses are picturesque and worth checking out.

Food and temples are some of the other sights in town. Meanwhile, the landscape around Ipoh, with its limestone hills, is quite different than that of southern peninsular Malaysia (where the typical scenery consists of boring palm plantations). Some of the limestone hills arounbd Ipoh have been changed into temples, and Perak Cave is the most famous of them all. This cave houses more than 40 Buddha statues and murals.
