Honolulu (United States)

Honolulu Travel Guide and Trip Resources

Royalty, beaches and history

Honolulu is the state capital and largest city of Hawaii. It is situated on the island of Oahu and has a population nearing 400,000. For most tourists arriving in Hawaii for a beach vacation, Honolulu is just the point of touchdown before moving on to other parts of the island. Yet Honolulu offers the same pleasures as the rest of Oahu, just in a more urban setting. If you want to be away from it all and crave peace and quiet, you should probably head elsewhere. If on the other hand you crave great restaurants, cultural sights and nightlife once you get out of your beach gear, you may want to consider staying in Honolulu.

Besides beaches (Waikiki is of course the most famous) and the pleasures of urban life, the city has some other very interesting sights as well. Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial cannot be missed. The same goes for `Iolani Palace, which is the only official palace of a reigning monarch within United States territory.

For those wanting to experience the natural beauty of Hawaii without venturing too far from the city, Diamond Head is a great starting point. This volcanic crater towers over Waikiki and offers great views over the city and immediate surroundings. [Review by travelindicator]
