Hong Kong Travel Guide and Trip Resources

An attack on the senses

Hong Kong (香港) is a Special Administrative Region (or de facto city state) of the People's Republic of China, situated on China's south coast, off Guangdong Province. The city prides itself on being a worldly city, and it's not hard to see where that desire comes from, given that its character was shaped by first and foremost its own Cantonese Chinese background, then the British who were here for nearly 150 years, and most recently the "mainland" Chinese weighing in on its development with all of their political and economic might. All these groups have in some way or another left their deep marks on "HK".

Hong Kong, an Asian economic powerhouse, city of 7 million, former British colony, and present-day subject of the People's Republic, is a must-see place for many reasons. There are those who will want to come here purely to gawk in awe at the skyline, and walk around Hong Kong's streets to take in the hustle and bustle, take pretty pictures, do some shopping and eating, and return home. In all fairness, those are pretty great reasons to come here and probably describe the experience of most tourists.

But there is more. If you dig a little deeper you will find a lot of interesting history and culture to explore. Although the skyline may fool you into thinking that this city is similar to New York, taking a stroll through some of the smaller streets and alleys in Kowloon and Central will remind you that this city is not all glamour and neon lights.

If you have the chance at all, take some time out to explore some of Hong Kong's nature, which is far more abundant than tourists often seem to think. Make a trip to Lantau Island to see great beaches, temples, fishing villages. Or simply head to the mountainous New Territories and wander around. [Review by travelindicator]
