Chinese city with a Mongol flavour

Hohhot is the capital of China's Inner Mongolia
Population makeup is 90% Chinese, the remainder mostly Mongolian (8-9%) and Hui (1-2%)
Temples and pagodas in town, lovely grasslands outside of it and an interesting architecture and atmosphere

Don't get me wrong, when it comes to China I absolutely love the HK - Beijing - Chongqing triangle and everything that lies within it. But I am probably even more fascinated by provinces like Inner Mongolia. Hohhot (呼和浩特) is its capital and so of course had to be visited.

The history of Hohhot goes far back, but the city only really took shape in the 16th century when the Mongol Tumed Tribe came in and established themselves here (ending their nomadic lifestyles). When the People's Republic was proclaimed, Hohhot (then still called Guisui) became the capital of Inner Mongolia and has since then seen steady development.

As the population make up of Hohhot is roughly 90% Han Chinese, 2% Hui and 8% Mongols (most of whom don't speak Mongolian), Hohhot is more like a Chinese city with a Mongol flavour than vice versa. That makes for an interesting atmosphere, a less monotonous architecture than other Chinese cities and lots of really good food (anything from Mongolian and Halal to Tibetan and Korean... the hotpot is really good!)

The city itself is not a huge tourist draw, but there are some good sights to check out, such as the famous Da Zhao Temple (a 16th century Buddhist monastery), the Temple of the Five Pagodas which wouldn't look out of place in India and the Inner Mongolia Museum. If you head out of town you find the lovely scenery of grasslands like Xilamuren and Gegentala. [Review by travelindicator]
