Hobart is the capital of Australia's Tasmania, located a 1+ hour flight from Melbourne or 2 hours flight from Sydney on the south-side of the island. With a population of just over 200,000 it is notably smaller than other Australian state capitals, and another thing that sets it apart is its relatively cool weather year round, reaching average highs of 22°C (71°F) in January, and lows of 5°C (40°F) in July.
Hobart lies at the foot of the (often snow-covered) Mount Wellington and at the mouth of the Derwent River, making for a hilly green and picturesque cityscape. Being the second oldest city in Australia, there is no shortage of historical British colonial architecture (Victorian and Georgian) in Hobart either, and the best place to start exploring these is the riverside Battery Point, south of the business district. This area has many smaller buildings dating back to the eary to mid 1800s, giving the whole place the intimate atmosphere of an Engish village - climate to match! The yellowish sandstone buildings house eateries and cafés, and besides great views of the river some of the one sight you will want to see is the St. George's Anglican Church.
Adjacent to Battery Point lies Salamanca Place, famous for the market with the same name. These markets are held on Saturdays between early morning and mid-afternoon and have hundreds of stalls vending everything from food to local crafts. It's only partly the goods that you will come here for ofcourse, as its the atmosphere and backdrop of historic warehouses that make it interesting.
If you have time to spend, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery as well as Botanical Gardens are worthwhile. And for those favoring some activity, a climb of Mount Wellington guarantees fantastic views. [Review by travelindicator]
