Heidelberg, on the River Neckar in south-west Germany's Baden-Württemberg might just be a serious contender for the title of German's prettiest city. Home to 150,000 people and sat in a valley of the Odenwald, Heidelberg is also the location of the renowned university with the same name that has given the world no less than 56 Nobel laureates.
So what makes Heidelberg so special? It is probably the uniform historical beauty of the townscape. Plenty of places have the odd old building in between modernity, but few towns manage to let visitors feel like they can immerse into its history like Heidelberg.
Look over it from the Heiligenberg and see a sea of red roofs around the river, here and there interrupted by a tall church tower. Look up closer in the Altstadt and you find such historical gems as the old Town Hall and university buildings, as well as various churches and charming squares.
But the main attraction is of course the Heidelberg Castle that stands above the old town. This "schloss" is said to be one of the most impressive in all of Europe. [Review by travelindicator]
