Itsukushima Shrine: one of the top sights in Japan

Hatsukaichi (廿日市市) is a city of nearly 120,000 people in the Hiroshima Prefecture of Japan. Easily reached by car or train from Hiroshima in under an hour, it's biggest sight is the Itsukushima Shrine.

This Shinto shrine is located on the island with the same name that lies opposite the city. This island is considered sacred, and for that reason common people were not allowed to enter it for much of its history. The most famous aspect of it is the torii gate that is set in the sea, creating stunning visuals during high tide, as you can see pictured with this article. The entire shrine complex is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the top attractions in Japan. [Review by travelindicator]
